Democratic Republic of Congo winger Jody Lukoki has been pronounced dead by his family. The 29-year-old suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his knee and was at Twente who play in the Dutch Eredivise. Lukoki began his football career at Ajax in 2011, where he won three league titles from the 2011/12 season till the 2013/14 season.
However his career at Amsterdam was not as good as it was when he started and this caused him to leave his boyhood club on a permanent basis to join PEC Zwolle in the summer of 2014. He enjoyed a three-year stint at Zwolle up until the summer of 2017, when he left for Ludogorets in Bulgaria. After playing in Bulgaria, he returned to Holland where he joined FC Twente where he sustained the anterior cruciate ligament damage.
Lukoki has represented the Netherlands at junior level but decided to play for the Democratic Republic of Congo at senior level. He earned three caps and scored one goal for Democratic Republic of Congo. FC Twente have released a statement, sympathizing with the deceased’s family and friends. Lukoki made history at PEC Zwolle when he scored their first goal in a European competition.
Lukoki’s cause of death is still unknown and the anterior cruciate ligament damage is not the cause of death. There are speculations that he died of a natural cause but nothing concrete has been said to be the cause of death as of yet. In a recent social media post, Lukoki captioned ”hardwork pays off ”. Lukoki played primarily as a winger, on either side of the pitch and occasionally as a striker.
He made his Ajax debut back in 2011 under Dutch tactician Frank de Boer. There has been no call for an autopsy to be conducted by his family as of yet and there has been no police presence neither have there been investigations on Jody Lukoki’s death.
