The Premier League weekend was another action-packed one with plenty highs and lows with the top four race intensifying and the battle to stay up getting more heated. Leicester City lost 1-2 to Everton who were facing relegation as they were 18th prior to the game at the King Power stadium. Ukrainian left-back Vitaly Mykolenko scored the opener in the fifth minute and the away end at the stadium erupted in loud noise.
Leicester however equalised a few minutes later, with Zambian striker Patson Daka restoring parity in front of the home fans. Leicester began to show glimpses of attacking intent and came close but Everton’s defending was resolute and that paid off soon enough as Mason Holgate found the back of the net just two minutes after the half hour mark.
The victory takes Everton as high as 16th and away from the red zone for now. Leicester’s chances for European football are now very reduced to a near impossible chance following the loss to Everton.
Meanwhile in the capital, Arsenal hosted Leeds and secured a 2-1 win over the Whites at the Emirates. A brace from Eddie Nketiah was all Arsenal needed, with Llorente’s goal only a consolation after being ten men as Luke Ayling was sent off. The win gives Arsenal 66 points, one behind Chelsea and four ahead of Spurs. The loss for Leeds means they are now 18th on the log and can be relegated to the Championship.
Relegated Norwich City lost 0-4 at Carrow Road to West Ham who are also pursuing a Europa League finish and the victory gives them 55 points, three behind sixth-place Manchester United. The Hammers crashed out of the Europa League last Thursday after losing 1-0 to Frankfurt in Germany. It proves to be a significant season for them as legendary captain Mark Noble will retire at the end of the season.
Manchester United were humiliated by Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex stadium in a quest to achieve UECL playoffs. Goals from Caicedo, Cucurella, Gross and Trossard secured an unforgettable victory that will remain fresh in every Brighton fan’s memory. United can no longer qualify for the UEFA Champions League as they have on game left to play, with 58 points. This is the lowest point accumulation by any Manchester United team since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.
Son Heung-Min’s strike was cancelled out by Luis Diaz in the late Saturday fixture between Liverpool and Spurs at Anfield in what could be a huge dent in their chase of rivals Manchester City to the crown of the title. With most teams having two games to go, the battle across the table gets more interesting and the final day- 22nd of May will definitely be a cracker.
