THE REVIEW: Seven And A Half Dates

Reviewer: Lydia Babatunde @lee_diah

In our opinion, this is the only Nollywood movie in recent times that is as good as The Wedding Party.

The movie, SEVEN AND A HALF DATES starring Mercy Johnson, Sola Sobowale, Toyin Abraham, Jim Iyke, Frank Donga, MC Lively and others opened at the cinemas on Friday, August 3, 2018. We saw it and here’s our review!

Good Story! The story is not so different! It is a reflection of the happenings in families around us. Just like the Wedding Party movie was a reflection of a typical Nigerian wedding. It was however beautifully told.

Great Picture! One of the first things we noticed was the picture quality coupled with the mood and colour in each of the scenes. It was a blend of the right emotion.

Music! A mixture of Humblesmith’s love and heartbreak songs alongside some instrumentals. What we loved was how the sounds came at the right time.

Acting! Give it to Sola Sobowale, Toyin Abraham and Mercy Johnson. They carried their roles well. Frank Donga, MC Lively brought their social media characters into the movie and it was well-done. Many in the hall were expecting to see Jim Iyke the ‘bad boy’ but were disappointed.

Audience Reaction! We saw this movie at two different locations and from the beginning to the end, the movie never had a dull moment. It was funny all through even for scenes that were not intended so. People stood up to clap at the end in the two locations.

Great Message! Seven and a Half Dates movie was funny but beyond that, it had series of messages for parents, singles, women, feminists and men. You may be too engrossed in the movie to notice the messages but amidst the fun and laughter, it’s there somewhere. The part where Sola Sobowale went on her knees and crying for forgiveness will get anyone.

We believe there’s more that can be done especially in how this movie ended. Would have made perfect sense with funfilled, Humblesmith on stage performing at the wedding of Mercy Johnson and ‘Jason’. Also, one of the dates could have been better casted.
