Fans of Bundesliga club Stuttgart have responded to the news of Lionel Messi handing a transfer request to Barcelona by launching a crowdfunded bid for the Argentine player.

In Messi’s opinion, he is out of contract with his current club and so eligible to leave on a transfer fee this summer, but La Liga having ruled in favor of Barcelona means that any team that intends to sign him will most likely have to pay his release clause of €700 million ($835 million).

Supporters of Stuttgart have now set their sights on the Barcelona talisman, aiming to raise €900 million ($1 billion) presumably to finance Messi’s wages.

A statement on the GoFundMe page reads:

“We VfB fans are collecting money to pay for Lionel Messi’s transfer. In the event that the planned amount is not reached on time or Lionel Messi joins another club, 100% of the money raised will be donated to Viva con Agua.”

Stuttgart finished third bottom of the Bundesliga last season, avoiding relegation only because of their success in a playoff game.
