Sowore Arrest: Presidency Slams Wole Soyinka For Supporting #RevolutionNow Protest

The Presidency has addressed those who have voiced their discontent towards the arrest of Omoyele Sowole, the Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the February 2019 election. Among the names mentioned was that of Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka.

The Presidency, speaking through the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, accused Soyinka of criticizing the government for not taking actions against lawlessness but turned around to attack it when it actually took action.

“They are calling out President Buhari and comparing him to autocratic leaders. This is an unpardonable blackmail that cannot stop the police and other law enforcement agencies from doing their work”, the Presidency said.

The Department of State Services had on Saturday arrested Omoyele Sowore as a result of the #RevolutionNow protests which he planned to hold across the country today.

A lot of Nigerians, including Soyinka, have been vocal about their anger towards the incident. The famed writer called it a travesty and violation of the fundamental rights of citizens.
