The race for the Golden Boot in the Premier League was one to remember as there was a lot of suspense and action that went down yesterday, as the race for the award went down to the last minute. As of matchday 36, Mo Salah was leading the goal chart with 22 goals, and second behind him was Spurs winger Heung-Min Son with 20 goals.

Son scored when Tottenham defeated Arsenal three-nil and that gave him a tally of 21 goals, one behind the Egypt captain. However, Son failed to find the back of the net against Burnley when Spurs beat the Clarets one-nil at home. Salah was not involved in Liverpool’s game against Southampton as he was recovering from an injury following the Reds’ FA Cup trophy win against Chelsea.

On the final day of the league season, Salah scored against Wolverhampton Wanderers, coming off the bench to score his 23rd league goal. This meant that Son Heung-Min would have to score twice to equal Salah and after 70 minutes, with Spurs three-nil ahead at Carrow Road, Salah was running away with it.  At the 71st minute mark, Son broke through and slotted a low shot to score his 22nd goal in the PL this season. Five minutes later, the South Korean doubled his tally to make it five-nil to Spurs and score his 23rd of the season, equalling Salah right in the final few minutes remaining.

Both wingers shared the award as each was given his Golden Boot award respectively, with Salah winning it for the third time since joining Liverpool in 2017. The Egyptian won it in 2018,2019(where Sadio Mane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also won it with him, tied at 22 goals), and now in the 2021/2022 season. It is te first time Son will win the Golden Boot award, having finished in the top five last season when teammate Harry Kane won it.

Mo Salah also won the Playmaker’s award finishing the season with 13 assists, just slightly ahead of teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold and becomes the second player in PL history to win top scorers in goals and assists since Harry Kane did it in the 2020/2021 season, but unfortunately did not win the Premie League’s player of the season, neither did Salah. This has brought many varying thoughts on the criteria for winning the Premier League player of the season amongst many fans.
