The rebel group that currently holds Luis Diaz’s father hostage has demanded “security guarantees” before releasing him. According to Colombian media reports, the National Liberation Army (ELN) has expressed concerns that the ongoing military and police search operations may delay the release and increase the risks involved.
Luis Manuel Diaz and his wife were abducted at gunpoint in Barrancas, Colombia, on October 28. Luis Diaz, a Liverpool player, has appealed to the kidnappers to release his father without further delay and put an end to the distressing situation.
After the kidnapping, Luis Diaz’s mother was abandoned in a car as the police closed in, while his father was taken hostage. Despite the challenging circumstances, Luis Diaz returned to playing for Liverpool and scored a stoppage-time goal at Luton Town in his first match since the abduction of his parents.
The ELN has reiterated its intention to release Luis Diaz’s father “as soon as possible.” However, they have expressed concerns about the scale of the search operation conducted by Colombian authorities, which they claim is delaying the release process. In a statement signed by commander Jose Manuel Martinez Quiroz, the ELN stated that they are making efforts to avoid incidents with government forces in the militarized area.
The ELN emphasized their commitment to releasing Mr. Luis Manuel Diaz unilaterally once they have the necessary security guarantees for the liberation operation. Both of Diaz’s parents were abducted by the ELN, but while his mother was found later on the same day, his father remains missing. The Colombian government has deployed hundreds of police and soldiers in the search for Luis Diaz’s father.
In a heartfelt plea, Luis Diaz called for the immediate release of his father, emphasizing the importance of respecting his integrity and ending the painful wait. He expressed hope that the kidnappers would reconsider their actions and allow his father to return safely.
