Nigerian Prankster ZFancy Arrested by Police Cybercrime Unit

Ubani Zion, widely known as ZFancy, a popular Nigerian prankster and social media influencer, was arrested by the Nigeria Police Force National Centre for Cyber Crimes on Wednesday morning in Abuja.

The arrest occurred around 11 a.m. and was confirmed by a top source at the cybercrime centre, who stated, “ZFancy, the popular prankster, had just been arrested by our men a while ago.”

ZFancy has faced accusations on social media, including allegations of involvement in rituals. On June 16, 2024, entertainer Dami Adenuga posted a video on Twitter featuring a woman named Kokina, who accused ZFancy of ritualism while searching for her missing friend. Adenuga called for police intervention, saying, “This ZFancy matter is looking very real. The Nigeria Police should intervene at this point.”

The video caught the attention of the Nigeria Police, who advised Kokina to report to the nearest police station and provided emergency contact information for further details.

When contacted, Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi confirmed the arrest, stating, “Yes. It’s in relation to a case of a wrong prank.”

In a statement released on Thursday via Twitter, Adejobi elaborated that the arrest followed the circulation of accusatory videos on social media, alleging ZFancy’s involvement in serious crimes, including rape. These videos caused significant concern among social media users.

“The Nigeria Police Force, through the NPF National Cybercrime Centre, has arrested a Nigerian ‘prankster’, one Mr. Ubani Zion Chibuike (AKA ZFancy), at an apartment in Wuye, Abuja. This arrest follows the circulation of accusatory videos on social media, in which ZFancy was alleged to have committed heinous crimes, including rape. These videos caused significant apprehension among social media users,” the statement read.

ZFancy claimed the videos were scripted and part of an attempt to regain the spotlight after a break. However, the police emphasized the serious implications of such actions, which incite fear or disturb public peace.

“The Police therefore warns pranksters and content creators to be law-abiding and be conscious of pranks and contents that could pose threats to the public and jeopardize the general security of our country. We urge the public to remain calm as we proceed with the necessary legal actions in this case,” the statement added.
