A man who claimed that God instructed him to engage in violent conduct, went berserk on Thursday in the premises of a Sango-Ota branch of a first generation bank, smashing car windshields and glass doors.
The middle-aged man, identified as Oyediran Oladipupo, was however prevented from barging into the bank.
The development, which caused serious panic among bank customers, saw everyone scampering for safety as they mistook the incident for armed robbery.
The bankβs management was said to have called on the policemen from the nearby Sango Area Command, who later stormed the bank and promptly arrested him.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect was in Police custody at Sango Police Station.
He said, βA man who was later identified as Oyediran Oladipupo was said to have gone to the bank (name withheld) at Temidire in Sango-Ota this afternoon.
βHe was reported to have started smashing carsβ windshields and the bankβs glass doors. The management of the bank had called on policemen from the nearby Sango Police Station and the suspect was promptly arrested.
βWhen interrogated, the man said, βItβs God that sent me to do what I did.’β
Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said the suspect would be charged to court for malicious damage after investigation.
