The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has thrown his weight behind Godswill Akpabio, former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, for the coveted position of Senate President.

"It's Pay Back Time": Wike Endorses Akpabio For Senate President The endorsement came during a visit by Akpabio and a group of supportive senators-elect on Tuesday, led by Ali Ndume, representing Borno South.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) had put forward Akpabio as their nominee for the Senate President role, with Barau Jibrin as the deputy. Wike’s endorsement further solidifies Akpabio’s aspirations.

A statement from the Akpabio campaign media office quoted Wike as expressing his support due to the former minister’s unwavering assistance during Wike’s bid for Rivers State governorship.

Wike remarked, “This is the time for me to support him because he supported me when I wanted to be the governor of Rivers State.”

He emphasized that “if the country is to progress, there is nothing wrong with the ruling party selecting a candidate they believe can effectively collaborate with the President-elect in the Senate President role.

“We are together to make sure they win,” Wike declared regarding the Akpabio and Barau project.

“Akpabio supported me during my governorship ambition. He stood by me all through and ensured that I won. I don’t pay back good with evil.

‘This is payback time for him. I will stand by him until he emerges as the next Senate president. Our team would soon meet to take a position on your aspiration.”

Wike advised Akpabio not to be disheartened by the opposition he may face, assuring him that it is a normal part of politics.

He encouraged Akpabio to remain steadfast and resolute in his pursuit of power, stating, “Don’t be worried or disturbed by the contending forces against your aspiration, it is normal in politics. Power is not given on a platter of gold, you fight for it.”

Impressed by Akpabio’s dedication to consulting his colleagues despite receiving endorsements from his party and the President-elect, Wike commended him, emphasizing the importance of fairness and unity for the progress of Nigeria.

“Let us be fair to this country. If we continue this way, Nigeria will not succeed. Don’t waiver, stay firm, and you will win at the end of the day.”

In response, Akpabio expressed gratitude to Wike for his support and extended his congratulations on Wike’s successful tenure as governor.

He acknowledged Wike’s commitment to justice, equity, and fairness, stating, “You have done well for your people and Nigerians. History would be kind to you as you exit the office in the next few days. You believe in justice, equity, and fairness, and that is what Nigerians know you for.”

With the endorsement from Governor Wike, Godswill Akpabio’s bid for the position of Senate President gains significant momentum. As the political landscape evolves, it remains to be seen how the upcoming 10th assembly will take shape and who will ultimately assume this influential role.
