Leo DaSilva, who personally experienced immigration law changes in the UK, asserted that Tiamiyu should not be blamed for his remarks, emphasizing the need for Nigeria to focus on its own development.

Emdee Tiamiyu found himself at the center of a heated debate after an interview with the BBC, which aired on Tuesday, May 23.

The interview took place shortly after Suella Braverman, the UK’s Home Secretary, imposed restrictions on Nigerians and international students, preventing them from bringing their family members while pursuing a Master’s degree in the country.

During the interview, Tiamiyu implied that Nigerians were merely using education as a means to gain entry into the UK, suggesting they lacked genuine intentions to study.

Recognizing the controversy he sparked with his statements, the YouTuber later issued an apology for his contentious remarks.

Leo DaSilva, a well-known figure from the reality show Big Brother Naija, stood up for Tiamiyu, drawing from his own experiences in the UK.

Leo recalled how he and many others had faced similar immigration law changes during their time in England. According to him, the British authorities often concealed their prejudice against foreigners, repeatedly implementing policies that hindered the interests of non-UK citizens.

In a series of tweets, Leo expressed his perspective on the matter: “I just want to point this out, this also happened to us in England a few years after in 2010. Conservatives changed many immigration laws for us. The UK has done this constantly and they just needed this PR not to seem prejudiced/racist. He is not at fault at all. We will eventually have to focus on developing Nigeria.”

He continued, shedding light on the challenges faced by immigrants in the UK: “One of the Worst places for immigrants in Europe but they’ve managed to hide it so well that even immigrants won’t know it’s not a great place for their real progress. I said this about the UK. They have managed to always hide that prejudice towards other people. If you don’t understand their culture you won’t know they really don’t want you in their country.”

Leo concluded by highlighting his preference for other countries: “Anything that will benefit other people from another country in the UK, the UK will always clamp down on it. You can do your research. They never really want any benefit for anyone asides from their own people. This is why I always advise Canada or America.”
