Court Sends Mother Who ‘Drowned Baby’ For Psychiatric Evaluation

Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Igbosere has sent a mother Olufunmilola Adisa, suspected of killing her baby, to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for psychiatric evaluation.

The 22 year old woman turned herself in to the police, alleging that she drowned her 21 months old child in a bucket of water.

According to the suspect, the murder was intentional, showing in the way she confidently narrated what had happened on the day of the murder.

The court ordered the evaluation to enable medical authorities determine the state of her mental health and whether she is fit to face trial.

The court gave the order following an application to that effect by the Director of the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender (OPD), Dr Babajide Martins.

The police in a temporary charge marked C/42d/2020 attached to the OPD’s application, “Adisa Oluwafunmilayo on May 11, 2020 at about 2020 hours at Plot 222, 21/211 Road Gowon Estate, Alimosho Local Government Area (LGA) Lagos unlawfully killed one Adisa Oluwanifemi, female, aged one and a half years, by drowning her in a bucket of water and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
