Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has defended the suspension and eventual removal of Iyorchia Ayu, the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Sunday, Wike said Ayu deserved the suspension given his anti-party activities and involvement in the PDP’s crisis during the 2023 general elections.

The suspension of Ayu was carried out by the Executive Committee of the PDP in Igyorov Ward of Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State after a vote of no confidence was passed on him.

Wike stated that Ayu’s suspension was long overdue and that he should have left his position earlier to prevent the PDP’s failure in the elections. He further pointed out that in advanced countries, a politician who fails woefully in their position would willingly resign without being prompted.

He also noted that Ayu lost his unit, ward, local government, and state in the elections, and therefore, cannot give directives to anyone in the PDP. Wike emphasized that stakeholders who have the party’s interests at heart cannot allow individuals with nothing attached to the party to destroy it.

In conclusion, Wike stated that the PDP needed committed members who could help it achieve its goals, and Ayu was not one of them. Therefore, his suspension and removal were in the best interest of the party.
