This development follows a recent order by a federal capital territory high court, directing the DSS to take legal action against Emefiele if there are any criminal allegations against him.

Presiding Judge Hamza Muazu emphasized that if Emefiele is not presented before a competent court within one week, the service should release him on bail.

In response, Peter Afunanya, spokesperson for the DSS, released a statement on Thursday, confirming that Emefiele has been charged in compliance with the court order.

“Sequel to an Abuja high court order of today, 13th July 2023, the Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr. Godwin Emefiele has been charged to court in compliance with the Order,” the statement reads.

“The public may recall that the service had, in 2022, applied for a court order to detain him in respect of a criminal investigation.

“Though he obtained a restraining order from an FCT High Court, the Service, however, arrested him in June 2023, on the strength of suspected fresh criminal infractions/information, one of which forms the basis for his current prosecution.”

“The Service assures the public of professionalism, justice, and fairness in handling this matter and indeed the discharge of its duties within the confines of the law.”

This omission has left many curious about the nature of the alleged criminal activities attributed to the former CBN governor.

Recalled President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele on June 9 and directed him to transfer his responsibilities to Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the deputy governor of the operations directorate. The day after the suspension, the DSS revealed that Emefiele was in their custody for “investigative reasons.”

As the case unfolds, Nigerians eagerly await further details regarding the charges against Emefiele and the subsequent legal proceedings. The outcome of this high-profile case will undoubtedly have significant implications for the nation’s financial and political landscape.
