Referee John Brooks has been substituted as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the upcoming matches between Liverpool vs Everton and Arsenal vs Manchester City. This change was made after Brooks made an incorrect call by disallowing a Brighton goal against Crystal Palace. In his place, Andre Marriner and David Coote will serve as the VAR for the respective games.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), responsible for refereeing in the Premier League, apologized to Brighton for the error made by Brooks. The goal, scored by Pervis Estupinan, was determined to be offside due to lines drawn incorrectly in the VAR room.
Former Premier League referee, Dermot Gallagher, reviewed the disallowed goal and attributed the mistake to human error. The Brighton club spokesperson accepted PGMOL’s apology and declined to make any additional comments.
Another VAR, Lee Mason, has also received attention for a missed call in the Arsenal vs Brentford match. He failed to determine that Christian Norgaard was in an offside position before assisting Ivan Toney’s equalizing goal. Dermot Gallagher analyzed this error as well.
As a result of the recent high-profile offside errors, Howard Webb, the head of referees, has called a meeting of Premier League officials for Tuesday. Appointments for the next round of Premier League matches will be announced at noon on Tuesday. The PGMOL has not yet commented on whether Lee Mason will be involved in future games. This is not the first time Mason has made a high-profile error, as he disallowed a goal for Newcastle during a match against Crystal Palace on September 3.
