UBA Group just came out swinging against fake news spreading on social media. The bank's statement says someone started a rumor that Tony Elumelu, the group's chairman, had divorced his wife. According to UBA, the whole thing is completely made up.
Things got serious fast. UBA didn't just deny the rumors, they called in the authorities. Three people have already been arrested for creating and spreading the false information. The names released are Kingsley Akunemeihe (who goes by @Directorkem on social media), Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue (@problemchimky).
The bank is not playing around. In their official statement, UBA warned everyone sharing this content to take it down immediately or face legal action. They're threatening defamation suits, damages, and whatever else they can hit people with under the law. UBA says investigations are still ongoing and more arrests could be coming.
This is the kind of thing that shows how wild misinformation can spread on social media these days. Someone posts something false, it gets reshared, people believe it, and suddenly a top businessman's reputation is on the line. The bank's response is basically: we're protecting our name and Tony's, and we're coming after everyone involved, no matter how deep we have to dig.
