Renowned photographer, Toyin Sokefun-Bello, popularly known as TY Bello, recently shared an intriguing revelation about her early start in the world of photography. During an episode of the I Said What I Said podcast, hosted by FK and Jola, TY Bello disclosed how her journey as a photographer began at the tender age of eight.
With an incredible career in both music and photography, TY Bello explained, “I have been writing songs since I was 8, 9, 10. I started music and photography professionally right at the same time.” This unexpected revelation sheds light on the multi-talented artist’s early foray into the creative arts.
However, despite her undeniable talent and passion for photography, TY Bello admitted that her pursuit of a university degree was primarily to fulfill her mother’s expectations. She revealed that she had planned to pursue a career as a “big hairstylist” after completing her education, emphasizing her longstanding affinity for creativity, which had always been an integral part of her life.
Reflecting on her post-graduation confusion, TY Bello stated, “After university, when everyone in my class knew where they wanted to work, and I had no such dream, I was very confused.” The artist’s uncertainty about her future led her to attend university to appease her mother, with aspirations of becoming a prominent hairstylist upon graduation.
However, a pivotal moment arose during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program when TY Bello had to make a crucial decision about her career path. Faced with the dilemma of where to be posted, she requested to be stationed in the southern part of Nigeria. It was during this period that TY Bello experienced a significant turning point that ultimately led her to discover her true passion for photography.
“I think that was the major turning point where I realized that I had to be posted to phototech because I just started photography,” she shared, highlighting the profound impact of that particular assignment. This serendipitous placement marked the beginning of TY Bello’s remarkable journey as a celebrated photographer, propelling her towards the pinnacle of success in the industry.
