Twitter CEO, Elon Musk, has announced that the social media platform will begin to cancel inactive accounts that have not been used for an extended period of time.

Musk confirmed this on Monday via a tweet, stating that Twitter is purging accounts that have had no activity for several years, resulting in a decrease in follower count.

He wrote: “We’re purging accounts that have had no activity at all for several years, so you will probably see a follower count drop,”

While Twitter has been undergoing changes under Musk’s leadership, including staff reductions and the removal of free verification checkmarks, these changes have caused alienation among both users and advertisers.

The latter has been avoiding the platform, resulting in a significant decrease in Twitter’s revenue, according to market trackers.

Despite the criticism, Twitter reinstated the blue ticks of some high-profile accounts, including media and celebrity accounts, in late April. However, the move received protests from some of the recipients.

Since Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, the platform’s content moderation has become more relaxed, allowing many previously banned users who had posted messages inciting hatred or spreading misinformation to return.

The decision to cancel inactive accounts may be part of Twitter’s effort to clean up the platform and make it more attractive to users and advertisers. While this move may result in a decrease in follower counts for some, it could potentially lead to a more engaged and active user base in the long run.
