In a crucial upcoming match, Thomas Tuchel, now at the helm of league-leading Bayern Munich, will face off against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. Tuchel’s last victory over Guardiola dates back to 2021 when he was in charge of Chelsea, leading the team to triumph in the Champions League final. This marked the first of three trophies that Tuchel claimed during his 20-month tenure at Stamford Bridge.

Manchester City later defeated Chelsea twice in the Premier League before Tuchel’s exit. The two clubs haven’t clashed since November 2014, when City, under Manuel Pellegrini, secured a 3-2 victory over the Bundesliga side to advance to the last 16.

Having replaced the dismissed Julian Nagelsmann at Bayern in March, Tuchel acknowledges that his team will need to deliver a top-notch performance to overcome City, who are currently enjoying an eight-game winning streak across all competitions.

Tuchel admits that he can’t draw many lessons from his previous encounters with Guardiola, stating, “It’s unique what Pep does. We’ll try to find solutions, but we’ll need a complete performance to create problems for City.”

Recognizing the challenge ahead, Tuchel added, “It is a major task in front of us. I was just outside [at Etihad Stadium], and that is the current gold standard for us.” Despite the formidable opposition, Tuchel remains optimistic, citing Bayern’s impressive Champions League results and performances thus far. He believes that the team should embrace the role of the slight underdog, saying, “We’ll try to make the most of it. We need to be confident and on top of our game.”
