The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Zamfara State has apprehended three suspects for their alleged involvement in printing and spending counterfeit naira and dollar notes.

Oche disclosed that the suspects were identified as Kamalu Sani, Uzaifa Muazu, and Suleiman Yusuf. They were arrested following a complaint by a commercial tricycle operator, Umar Nasir, who received a fake N1,000 note from one of the suspects.

The NSCDC spokesperson revealed that Sani boarded a tricycle from Kasuwa and gave the rider a fake N1,000 note when he arrived at his destination. The rider raised the alarm, which led to the suspect’s arrest.

Upon investigation, NSCDC operatives traced the supplier of the fake currency notes to Kotorkoshi town.

“One Muazu Abdulkarim, who is said to be the prime suspect, directed his son, Uzaifa Muazu, who has been in the illicit business with his father for the past three years, to open a box that contained the fake currency notes for onward supplies to suspects,” Oche said.

During the arrest, N60,000 and $2,600 in counterfeit notes were seized from the suspects.

One of the suspects, Sani, confessed to using fake N1,000 notes for transactions within Tsafe and Gusau for the past year.

He further confessed that he was introduced to the crime by Ado Gurgu, a resident of the Tsafe Local Government Area, who took him to Muazu Abdulkarim of Kotorkoshi, who used to supply the fake currency notes to them.

Sani revealed that he was doing illegal business with his friend, Suleiman Yusuf. He added that he used to pay N400 for every fake N1,000 note he collected from the prime suspect, Abdulkarim.

The NSCDC spokesperson confirmed that the suspects would be charged in court after the completion of their investigation.

He also urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or activities to security agencies.
