On Wednesday in Warri, Delta State, a group of elites called “The Mid-Westerners” declared that it is time for the old Mid-Western region to produce the next vice president of Nigeria. They argue that the region has been marginalized since 1960 and has not tasted the presidency nor the vice presidency for over 24 years.

The group addressed mainstream journalists and stated that the recent criticism against the choice of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as running mate to Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was unnecessary. They claimed that Okowa has paid his dues in politics and has the laurels to show for it.

The group also expressed their disappointment in what they called the “use and dump” tactics of people from the old Eastern region against Igbos in Delta. They asked why the North Eastern part of Delta State should be treated nonchalantly by their Igbo brothers and sisters across the Niger.

The group urged Nigerians, particularly Deltans, to vote for Atiku and Okowa, as well as other PDP candidates at all levels during the general elections. They called on all sons and daughters of the old Mid-Western region to unite and support the PDP, which they believe is the only party that has given them this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The group’s statement was signed by Hon. Iwemdi Nwahan, Prof David Ejenobo, and Hon. Fidelis Chimokwu, who are the chairman, vice-chairman, and secretary of the group, respectively.
