The executive members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ward 8, Calabar Municipality, Cross River, Nigeria have suspended Mr. Ekpenyong Iso, the state Commissioner for Culture and Tourism. The suspension is based on allegations of anti-party activities and misappropriation of funds against the commissioner.
In a statement jointly signed by Mr. Kingsley Ekpe, the Chairman of Ward 8, and Mr. Gilbert Bassey, the Secretary of Ward 8, the party stated that Iso’s suspension was pursuant to article 21 (D) of the APC’s constitution. The party also explained that the suspension was a result of the recommendations of the disciplinary and fact-finding committee, which investigated the allegations against the commissioner.
The statement further directed the suspended commissioner to stay away from all party activities during the 12-month suspension period, which takes immediate effect. The party wished him well in his political endeavors.
Reacting to the suspension, Iso denied the allegations leveled against him, stating that he was not involved in any anti-party activities or misappropriation of funds during the just-concluded polls.
He described the statement issued on his suspension as the work of unscrupulous persons. According to him, the Ward executive of the party would meet soon to refute the allegations made against him.
The suspension of the commissioner is a reminder of the importance of political parties’ adherence to internal rules and regulations in Nigeria’s political landscape. It is essential for political actors to be accountable and transparent in their dealings to ensure a fair and democratic process.
