The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has responded to recent remarks made by the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, who stated that the agency would arrest corrupt governors whose tenures end on May 29. Wike, who has been accused of masterminding alleged rigging in the last presidential and governorship elections in the state, stated that he would comply with the EFCC’s invitation if invited after the end of his tenure.
During an interview on the SUNRISE program on Channels Television, Wike refuted claims of running away from Nigeria days before the inauguration of his successor, as some former governors had done in the past. He stated that he had no intention of fleeing the country and would not hesitate to honour the EFCC’s invitation if called upon.
Wike also expressed his belief that the EFCC had no basis for inviting him, as he had not been accused of any wrongdoing. He emphasized that he was prepared to face any legal action if necessary and urged the EFCC to focus on conducting thorough investigations and bringing corrupt individuals to justice.
The governor’s statement was seen as a demonstration of his commitment to accountability and transparency in government, as well as his willingness to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to combat corruption.
