TalkGlitz had reported on Dec 19, that the embattled Director General of the Obi-Datti campaign was convicted of breaching the Money Laundering Act by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The LP chieftain was subsequently sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

But the presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, gave an option of N500,000 a fine on each of the 26 count charges, totalling N13m for which he was found guilty.

Doyin Okupe opted to pay a fine of N13 million to beat the 4:30 pm deadline.

He announced his resignation in a letter addressed to Peter Obi, LP presidential candidate, dated December 20, 2022.

“Dear Peter, you will recall that I briefed you yesterday about my personal travails in seeking justice and clearing my name using the Nigerian Legal System to pursue same,” the letter reads.

“I have invested too much in your campaign to allow my personal travails to become a source of distraction.

“In the circumstances, I have opted to step aside and plead that you appoint a new Campaign DG who can continue the assignment with zero distractions.”

There have been words of commendation for Doyin Okupe as he stepped down as Director General of the Labour Party presidential campaign.

His decision to resign has since stirred reactions from Nigerians, as such action is uncommon in the Nigerian political space.
