The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner had been in the oil-rich Arabian country on commercial duties in his capacity as an ambassador.

Despite the club’s hierarchy not approving of the trip, Messi left France for Saudi Arabia, leading to the decision to suspend him.

This comes on the back of poor performances by PSG’s players, including Messi himself, who featured in a disappointing 3-1 loss to Lorient on Sunday.

Messi’s suspension means he will miss the upcoming matches against Troyes and Ajaccio. Messi joined the French club two years ago and is coming to the end of his two-year contract in June. There are indications that the World Cup winner will not sign an extension.

Messi has scored 31 goals and secured 34 assists in 71 matches for PSG. The club currently has a five-point lead at the top of the league with five matches left to play, and Messi could help them win the French League title if he returns in time for their crucial upcoming games.
