There is currently an atmosphere of unrest in Lafia, the capital city of Nasarawa State, Nigeria, as protesters have taken to the streets to express their discontent with the outcome of the recently concluded governorship election in the state. The declaration of election results has resulted in traffic congestion in the capital city.

Reports reaching us from the state capital indicate that the protest turned violent and resulted in the death of one person, while several others sustained injuries of varying degrees. According to eyewitness accounts, the protesters engaged in acts of vandalism and destroyed public and private property.

In response to the situation, security agencies have been deployed to strategic locations in the state to prevent the spread of the violent protest and maintain law and order.

This incident has sparked concerns and renewed calls for transparent elections in Nigeria, with appeals to relevant authorities to address the underlying issues that provoked the protest.

Our attempts to obtain confirmation from the police Command in the state were unsuccessful as the Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Ramham Nansel, did not respond to text messages, phone calls, or issue a statement on the protest at the time of filing this report.

It is imperative for all stakeholders to work towards peaceful and transparent elections, and for the authorities to take proactive measures to address any grievances arising from the electoral process. Violence and destruction of property are not acceptable means of expressing dissatisfaction, and dialogue remains the best way to resolve issues.
