President-elect Bola Tinubu, who recently returned from a three-country trip to London, Saudi Arabia, and Paris, has left Nigeria for Europe. The purpose of his visit is to fine-tune the transition plans and programmes, and policy options with some of his key aides, according to a statement from the Office of the President-elect signed by Tunde Rahman. The trip was deemed necessary to allow Tinubu to carry out these tasks without undue pressure and distractions.

During his visit, the President-elect will engage with investors and other key allies with the aim of promoting investment opportunities in Nigeria and his administration’s readiness to foster a business-friendly environment through policies and regulations. Meetings with multi-sectoral actors in Europe’s business community, including those involved in manufacturing, agriculture, tech, and energy, have already been scheduled.

Tinubu hopes to persuade these actors of Nigeria’s readiness to conduct business under his leadership through mutually-beneficial partnerships that focus on job creation and skills acquisition. Reviving the country’s economy is a significant aspect of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, and this meeting is part of his efforts to re-establish Nigeria’s importance in the global economic chain and create empowering opportunities for the country’s young population.

The President-elect has promised to hit the ground running, and this visit demonstrates his commitment to this promise as he has already begun talks with global actors in crucial areas of the economy and security. Before leaving the country, Tinubu met with the House of Representatives candidates for Speaker and Deputy Speaker, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who were endorsed by his party, the All Progressives Congress, and presented to him by a Joint Task Team of the House.

Tinubu is expected to return shortly to prepare for his official swearing-in as Nigeria’s 16th President on May 29, 2023.
