The passing of a 65-year-old security guard and the loss of property and livelihood of several hardworking Nigerians at the Akere Spare Parts market in the Apapa Ajegunle area of Lagos State has saddened President Muhammadu Buhari.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President (Media & Publicity), released a statement on Wednesday conveying the President’s deepest sympathies to the affected traders and their families, who are struggling to cope with this setback.

President Buhari expressed concern about the recent spate of fire incidents in markets and called on the relevant authorities to take necessary precautions to prevent further incidents. While the extent and cause of the damage are still being evaluated, the President praised the Lagos State Fire Service for their prompt response to the fire, which saved a nearby filling station with a 33,000-litre PMS tanker and other adjoining buildings.
