A publisher of Issues Magazine, Oluseun Oduneye, was rescued by the police in Ogun State after being kidnapped in the Mobalufon area of Ijebu Ode on Thursday. The police engaged the kidnappers in a 45-minute gun battle and were able to rescue the victim unharmed.

According to SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the State Police Public Relations Officer in Abeokuta, the journalist was riding in his Toyota Camry car when he was attacked at about 7:50 pm on his way to Ijebu-Ode from Abeokuta.

The abductors later demanded N30 million as ransom after calling the victim’s wife using his phone the following morning. In response to the report, the Commissioner of Police, Frank Mba, directed the Divisional Police Officer, Obalende Divisional Headquarters, Murphy Salami, to ensure the safe rescue of the victim. The DPO mobilized his detectives and embarked on a technical and intelligence-based investigation that led them to the kidnappers’ hideout in the Idimu area of Lagos.

The kidnappers engaged the police in a shootout before abandoning the victim and fleeing. Mba commended the gallantry and professional conduct of his men and urged members of the public, especially hospitals and traditional healers, to inform the police if anybody with gunshot injuries was seen in their area.
