A man identified as Philibus Ibrahim has been arrested by the Police Command in Kano State, Nigeria for allegedly strangling his 22-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Theresa Yakubu.
The crime was committed in Tudun Wada Local Government Area (LGA) of the state. Ibrahim was apprehended alongside his accomplice, Gabriel Bila, both of Unguwar Korau Tudun-Wada LGA.
According to the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Mamman Dauda, the arrest was made following a tip-off from a good Samaritan. The police received information on April 2 at about 4:30 p.m. that a lady was lying unconscious on the roadside of the Kano-Jos Road in Anadaria Village. A team of policemen was immediately dispatched to the scene, and the victim was rushed to Tiga General Hospital, where she was confirmed dead by a doctor.
Further investigations revealed that the victim had left Nassarawan Kuki to Yantomo Village in Garin Babba LGA of Kano on March 27, around 6:00 p.m. The principal suspect was apprehended during the investigation and confessed to the crime of using the victim’s veil to strangle her.
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Dauda, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Kano. He also stated that the investigation was ongoing and once completed, the suspects would be charged to court.
The heinous act of taking another person’s life is a grave offense that goes against the fundamental principles of humanity. The police must be commended for their prompt response to the tip-off and subsequent arrest of the suspects. It is hoped that justice will be served, and the culprits will face the full weight of the law. The incident is a reminder of the need for increased awareness and advocacy against violence, especially against women and vulnerable groups.
