In a riveting season opener, Chelsea’s new manager Mauricio Pochettino expressed his disappointment as his side managed to salvage a point against Liverpool after coming from behind to secure a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
The match kicked off with Liverpool quickly settling into the rhythm of the new season at Stamford Bridge. The visitors displayed their dominance during the initial 30 minutes and could have easily taken a commanding lead.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah came agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock as his shot struck the crossbar, only to set up Luis Diaz for the opening goal moments later. However, Salah’s second goal was denied by VAR due to an offside call after a thorough review.

Addressing concerns about the ongoing transfer battle between Chelsea and Liverpool for the Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, Pochettino emphasized the need for improvement in all aspects of the team. He stated, “If we want to be a contender we need to improve in all areas. It’s time to work all together, once the transfer window closes, to find the best dynamic. This result makes us believe, that is why I am positive.”
Liverpool, grappling with the loss of key midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to the Saudi Pro League, displayed vulnerabilities in their defense during the game. Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager, acknowledged the strong start but admitted that losing control of the game opened the door for Chelsea’s resurgence.
Klopp affirmed, “The start was pretty convincing. We scored two wonderful goals, one was disallowed for an offside. We opened up the door for Chelsea, we lost the ball in moments where it was difficult to prepare for it. It gave the game a different direction, so we were not in control of the game.” Despite this setback, Klopp remains optimistic and is eagerly anticipating the season ahead.
Both Chelsea and Liverpool aim to bounce back from challenges in the previous season. Liverpool, who missed out on Champions League qualification for the first time in seven years, seek to regain their footing and return to the top of the league.
