Mr. Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the February 28th Presidential and National Assembly Elections, has expressed his concerns regarding the manipulation of the rule of law and the suppression of the will of the people.
He stated that these are potent tools used to destroy societies. Obi made this statement in a letter addressed to Nigerians on the eve of the rescheduled Governorship and State Assembly Elections, which was slated to hold on March 18th.
In his letter titled “A new Nigeria is again possible on the 18th of March,” Obi urged Nigerians not to allow the misconduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the February 25th Presidential Elections, to deter them from returning to the polling booth to vote in the Governorship and State Assembly election on March 18th.
Obi expressed his gratitude to Nigerians for their belief and commitment that a New Nigeria is possible through the Labour Party. He emphasized that a New Nigeria has already begun and implored Nigerians to continue the fight for a New Nigeria.
Obi acknowledged that the general state of the country, which includes increasing poverty, insecurity, corruption, unemployment, failing educational and health systems, is troubling. He noted that what INEC did with the WILL OF NIGERIANS on the 25th of February was even more troubling. Obi called on INEC not to hinder the efforts to get justice for a New Nigeria and to provide all the required materials and access to legal and technical teams to do their job.
Obi also warned that the destruction of a society can be gradual or sudden through deliberate manipulation of the rule of law and suppression of the will of the people. He encouraged Nigerians to be inspired by the creativity, passion, patriotism, and relentless optimism of Nigerians, particularly the youths who desire a New Nigeria.
Obi saluted young Nigerians who braved the challenges and withstood all kinds of difficulties and other contrived obstacles to cast their votes and make their voices heard. He noted that their desire, which represents the appeal and prayer of the majority of Nigerians, must be achieved and sustained. He called on his supporters to use the same burning passion and commitment displayed during the Presidential campaign to troop out in their numbers and vote in the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.
Obi condemned the attacks on innocent traders, particularly those from the South East, in parts of the South West, especially Lagos, on account of their political persuasions. He called for unity and condemned those that are invoking tribal prejudice, hatred, and violence. He urged that killing and attacking people, burning markets and properties, and suppressing people from a section of the country must stop and should not define our politics. Obi prayed for those that lost their lives in this struggle and for those that were attacked and injured.
In conclusion, Obi implored Nigerians to vote for a new set of dynamic, committed, and competent leaders. He emphasized that it is time to put in place a government that is accountable and deeply committed to a New Nigeria, a Nigeria that is inclusive and sustainably growing for the benefit of all.
