Adeleke’s victory had been challenged by Adegboyega Oyetola, former governor of Osun, from the tribunal up to the apex court.

Although Oyetola had won at the tribunal, the appeal and supreme courts affirmed Adeleke as the winner of the July 2022 governorship election.

In a statement released by Tunde Rahman, Tinubu’s aide, the President-elect praised Oyetola for his integrity and transparency in governance despite losing his office.

“I congratulate Mr. Ademola Adeleke over his declaration by the Supreme Court as the winner of the Osun governorship election,” said Tinubu.

“I must also commend the immediate-past governor of the state, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, for exercising his democratic rights as the constitution allows him to do. Governor Oyetola discharged himself creditably in office.”

Tinubu went on to urge Adeleke to immediately settle down to work and continue from where the former governor left off. “He should now move to unite the state. I also urge all the people of Osun to work for peace and progress in the state,” he added.

The legal battle between Adeleke and Oyetola had been ongoing since the Osun governorship election held on July 16, 2022. The INEC had initially declared Adeleke as the winner of the election, but Oyetola appealed the decision, leading to a prolonged legal battle that lasted several months.

With the Supreme Court’s final ruling on the matter, Adeleke can now focus on delivering on his electoral promises to the people of Osun state. The new Governor has promised to prioritize education, healthcare, and infrastructure development in the state, and his supporters are optimistic that he will fulfill his mandate.
