Osimhen Makes History with Napoli's Serie A Win
King of Naples: Osimhen’s Record-Breaking Season

In a historic win for Napoli, Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen scored a crucial goal in the 52nd minute to secure the club’s first Italian Serie A title in 33 years. The match ended in a 1-1 draw against Udinese, but with this result, Napoli has an unassailable lead of 16 points with five games in hand. Fans across Naples and beyond were overjoyed by the news, and celebrations erupted both inside and outside the stadium in Udine.

This is Napoli’s third title in Italy’s top division, the previous two won under the leadership of legendary Argentine player Diego Maradona in 1987 and 1990. Following Maradona’s passing in November 2020, the team renamed their home stadium in his honor.

Osimhen’s sterling performance this season has earned him the nickname “King of Naples” among Napoli fans. He has also equaled George Weah’s record for the highest African goalscorer in Serie A, having scored 46 goals to date.

In addition, Osimhen has emerged as the African player with the most goals in a single Italian league season, having scored 22 times in the 2022/23 season. This feat has broken the records of Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o, who scored 21 goals for Inter in the 2010/11 season, as well as Nigerian forward Simy Nwankwo, Senegalese Keita Balde, and Egyptian Mohamed Salah, who scored 20, 16, and 15 goals respectively for Crotone, Lazio, and Roma in previous seasons.
