Nigerian actor Olumide Oworu has spoken out regarding the controversy surrounding his candidacy for the Lagos state assembly election.
He blame on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing to upload his name in the final list of candidates running for the state House of Assembly in the concluded election.
Recalled that Oworu had announced his intention to run for the Surulere Constituency 1 seat in Lagos under the Labour Party (LP) in February, eight months after the deadline for the submission of nomination forms had passed.
Candidates for the state assembly polls were expected to have turned in their forms by August 18, 2022.
However, confusion arose when the INEC’s result sheet listed Bode Adebayo, another LP member, instead of Oworu. The question became whether or not Oworu was the legitimate LP candidate in the Lagos assembly election.
In a statement on social media, Oworu asserted that INEC failed to comply with a court directive ordering his inclusion on the list of candidates for the Surulere Constituency 1 seat at the Lagos assembly election.
“Regarding the authenticity of my candidacy and my name not appearing on the ballot, that is a situation that came about due to the failure of the INEC to comply with the subsisting judgment of the Federal High Court delivered on the 2nd of February 2023 in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/2115/2022,” Oworu said.
“Wherein INEC was ordered to open her website to allow the labour party to submit the list of her candidates or accept the same manually immediately.
“INEC failed to upload the names on the list sent by the Labour Party in October 2022. I assure you that this endeavour was not one for clout but was borne out of a genuine desire for change.”
