Nollywood actress Ronke Oshodi Oke recently expressed her deep regrets for campaigning on behalf of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, following her firsthand experience during the EndSARS protest. The nationwide protests, which took place in October 2020, were primarily aimed at disbanding the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
During an interview with Chude Jideonwo, Ronke openly admitted that her decision to campaign for the APC was not driven by monetary gain, as she received minimal financial compensation. Instead, she believed in the party’s ability to lead Nigeria to greater heights. However, her expectations were ultimately shattered, leading to her feelings of disappointment.
“I truly believed that the APC was going to take Nigeria to the next level. So, even though I didn’t receive substantial financial rewards during the campaign, I wasn’t focused on the money. I was more concerned about what would happen in the future,” Ronke shared.
She further elaborated on her disillusionment, particularly in light of the EndSARS protest. “When the EndSARS protest emerged, I was truly disheartened. Our governor was making conflicting statements simultaneously. They claimed that no one was killed, but the death of even one person represents the loss of fifty lives. It affects not only the person who died but also their dependents, parents, and siblings,” Ronke added.
The actress’s candid remarks shed light on her changing perception of the APC, reflecting the disillusionment felt by many Nigerians who participated in the EndSARS protest. Ronke’s disappointment highlights the discrepancy between the promises made by the political party and the reality experienced by the citizens.
