In a press briefing held in Abuja, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, announced that the NLC would be shutting down the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for its failure to make cash readily available to Nigerian citizens. This, according to the NLC, has caused untold hardship to the Nigerian people.

As a result, the NLC has directed all its affiliate unions to begin mobilisation efforts to ensure total compliance with the proposed shutdown of the apex bank. Additionally, workers have been instructed to stay at home from Wednesday of next week and to stockpile foodstuffs to last them throughout the duration of the industrial action.

During the Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting, which was held to review the seven-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government to make cash available to the people, Comrade Ajaero called on Nigerians to bear with the NLC as the action was meant to reduce the suffering that Nigerians are currently experiencing as a result of the cash crunch.

He also emphasised that the NLC would be physically present at all CBN offices nationwide to ensure that the shutdown is carried out effectively. The NLC’s decision to shut down the CBN was made with the aim of putting pressure on the government to take urgent action to address the cash shortage in the country.
