Nigerian Army Rescues Woman in Lagos Lagoon Suicide Attempt
Lagos Lagoon Suicide Foiled by Nigerian Army

Soldiers from the Nigerian Army’s 81 Division, operating under the command of 81 Division Officers’ Mess in Marina Lagos, successfully averted a suicide attempt by Mrs. Francesca Spark, who had plunged into the Lagos Lagoon in an attempt to take her own life. This incident was disclosed by Lt. Col. Olabisi Ayeni, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, in a statement released on Monday.

According to Lt. Col. Ayeni, the troops of the 65 Battalion, stationed at the Officers’ Mess, spotted Mrs. Spark and promptly utilized their military riverine expertise to rescue her. They provided her with immediate first aid and ensured her stabilization with the assistance of the battalion’s medical team.

After Mrs. Spark’s condition had stabilized, her family was contacted, and she was handed over to her husband, Mr. Spark Oghene Ovie, who resides in Awoyaya, Lagos.

Major General Muhammed Takuti Usman, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 81 Division, commended the soldiers for their keen observation, resourcefulness, bravery, and gallantry in handling this critical situation. He expressed satisfaction that the soldiers effectively applied their disaster management training in a scenario that could have resulted in the loss of a fellow citizen’s life.

Major General Usman emphasized that operations like this fall under the category of military activities conducted during emergencies or natural disasters, highlighting that troops have been well-trained to support primary agencies during such crisis situations. He also reassured the residents of the 81 Division’s commitment to safeguarding them and their properties, even in times of emergencies.
