In a bid to foster stronger ties and harness the potential of their shared cultural heritage, histories, and demographics, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria announced on Tuesday that Nigeria and the Republic of Benin would collaborate extensively for the benefit of their citizens.
The announcement was made during his attendance as a special guest at the 63rd Independence anniversary of the Republic of Benin, following an invitation extended by President Patrice Talon.
The Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, Mr. Dele Alake, released a statement detailing President Tinubu’s remarks during the occasion.
Tinubu emphasized the significance of the geographical proximity and economic similarities between the two nations, stating that such factors compelled them to jointly pursue the goal of growth and development.
During an interaction with journalists, Tinubu said, “Nigeria and the Benin Republic are conjoined twins. We are joined from one stomach. In every aspect, we are one and we share much in common.”
He emphasized that the vision of political and economic stability for both nations could only be realized by working collaboratively. The President also expressed his commitment to strengthening and expanding the partnership between Nigeria and the Benin Republic at various levels.
President Tinubu expressed his gratitude to President Talon for extending the invitation and also acknowledged the presence of six Nigerian state governors who graced the occasion. The state governors in attendance were Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq (Kwara), Nasir Idris (Kebbi), and Mohammed Bago (Niger).
In response, President Patrice Talon conveyed his appreciation to President Tinubu for honoring the invitation and becoming the first foreign leader to participate in Benin Republic’s independence celebration.
“I want to really appreciate President Tinubu for honoring our invitation to participate in our 63rd anniversary.
“It is not a normal practice to invite a foreign leader for independence celebration, but this signals the constructive and positive relationship we have enjoyed, and more benefits to come,’’ Tallon added.
President Talon also emphasized the significance of encouraging a positive relationship among citizens of both nations.
Following the Independence anniversary event, President Tinubu has returned to Nigeria. He is now expected to participate in the high-level meeting of the ruling All Progressives Congress scheduled to take place between August 2 and August 3.
The collaboration between Nigeria and the Benin Republic is expected to open new avenues for cultural exchange, economic partnerships, and mutual growth. As the two nations reaffirm their commitment to work together, the citizens can look forward to enhanced cooperation and shared benefits in various aspects of life.
