Promising NFL draft prospect Michael Jefferson, widely regarded as one of the top 30 receivers in the 2023 class, was involved in a tragic car crash on Sunday night, sustaining severe injuries. The accident took place on U.S. 43 in Mobile County, Alabama, at approximately 7:55 PM.

According to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency officials, a 55-year-old man driving a 2014 Dodge Charger collided head-on with Jefferson’s 2019 Chevrolet Impala. After the initial impact, a 2008 Nissan Maxima struck the Dodge. The driver of the Dodge was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jefferson’s agent, Jon Perzley of Sportstars, informed ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday that his client had been injured in the crash and had undergone multiple surgeries. The extent to which these injuries will affect the 23-year-old’s football career remains uncertain.

As the investigation into the accident continues, ALEA officials have confirmed that troopers are still looking into the incident.

Jefferson began his college career at Alabama State and later became a star at Louisiana, amassing 51 catches for 810 yards and seven touchdowns last season. During the NFL combine in Indianapolis last month, Jefferson impressed with a 4.56 40-yard dash. Some experts had projected the 6-foot-3 wideout as a mid-round pick in this month’s draft.
