Ondo Assembly Declares War on Drug Abuse

In a bid to combat the menace of drug abuse in the state, the Ondo State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting laws aimed at curbing illicit drug activities. The assurance was given during a meeting held at the Assembly’s headquarters, where the Zonal Commander, Zone J of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr Parah Bawa, was hosted by the Speaker of the House, Mr Olamide Oladiji.

Representing the Speaker at the event, the Deputy Speaker, Mr Abayomi Akinrutan, stated that the state government is resolute in collaborating with relevant authorities, including the NDLEA, to implement awareness programs and advocacy initiatives targeting drug abuse prevention across the state.

Describing Ondo State as one of the most peaceful states in the country, Mr Oladiji emphasized the importance of educating parents, stakeholders, and individuals about the grave dangers associated with drug abuse. He pointed out that a society riddled with drug-related issues cannot progress and achieve meaningful development.

In recognition of his unwavering commitment to the cause, the NDLEA honored Mr Olamide Oladiji with the title of ‘Ambassador of War Against Drug Abuse’ (WADA). The esteemed title serves as a testament to his dedication to supporting a zero-tolerance stance against drug abuse within the state.

During the meeting, Mr Parah Bawa, the Zonal Commander, Zone J of the NDLEA, conveyed the purpose of his visit, which was to strengthen the cooperation between the agency and the Ondo State House of Assembly in the fight against drug trafficking, drug abuse, and other social vices.

Mr Bawa revealed the alarming statistic that over 14 million people engage in various drug-related offenses in Nigeria each year. This disturbing figure highlights the urgent need to address the issue comprehensively. To this end, the NDLEA created the ‘War Against Drug Abuse’ (WADA) initiative, aimed at curbing drug abuse and its detrimental impact on society.

In his address, Mr Bawa called for collective efforts from all sectors of society to eradicate unhealthy drug-related behavior. He also extended appreciation to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for his commitment to implementing measures that ensure Ondo State remains a safe haven for its residents.

As part of their strategy, the NDLEA has partnered with the Ministry of Education to incorporate drug abuse awareness programs at all levels of education. This proactive approach seeks to nip the problem in the bud by educating and sensitizing the youth about the dangers associated with drug abuse.

The Ondo State House of Assembly pledged its full support to the NDLEA and affirmed its determination to actively participate in the fight against drug abuse within the state. With collaborative efforts, stakeholders hope to make significant strides in creating a healthier, safer, and drug-free society for the people of Ondo State.
