Meta Platforms Inc, the parent entity of the social media platform Facebook, has sacked over 11,000 employees, representing about 13 percent of the total workforce.Β
Mark Zuckerberg, Metaβs chief executive, announced the mass layoffs in a message to employees, which Meta shared on its Newsroom.
This development is coming a few days after Twitter, a micro-blogging platform, sacked about 50 percent of its staff.
βToday Iβm sharing some of the most difficult changes weβve made in Metaβs history. Iβve decided to reduce the size of our team by about 13% and let more than 11,000 of our talented employees go,β Zuckerberg said.
βWe are also taking a number of additional steps to become a leaner and more efficient company by cutting discretionary spending and extending our hiring freeze through Q1.
βI want to take accountability for these decisions and for how we got here. I know this is tough for everyone, and Iβm especially sorry for those impacted.β
