In an impressive display of academic ambition, more than 1.2 million candidates have registered for the 2023 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) being conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO). This information was disclosed by Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, the Registrar/Chief Executive of NECO, during his monitoring of the examination in various schools across the country.
According to a statement released by Azeez Sani, the Head of Information and Public Relations at NECO, out of the vast number of candidates, 601,074 are male, while 584,814 are female. This highlights a significant representation of female candidates taking part in the examination.
During his visit to Jos, Plateau State, where he was overseeing the conduct of the examination in selected schools, Prof. Wushishi expressed his satisfaction with the overall organization and management of the 2023 SSCE. Reports gathered from various regions across the nation suggested a smooth and well-coordinated process, making it one of the best-organized examinations in recent years.
The Registrar attributed this success to the implementation of stringent measures to combat examination malpractice. These measures have been put into effect nationwide, and Prof. Wushishi emphasized that they are already proving effective. Ensuring the integrity of the examination is a top priority for NECO, and their commitment to this cause is evident in the positive results they are witnessing.
Some of the schools visited by Prof. Wushishi during his monitoring include the Airforce Military School, King and Queens Academy, and Emmanuel International College, all located in Jos. He expressed his satisfaction with the conduct of the examination in these institutions, praising the school authorities, teachers, and students for their commitment to maintaining a conducive and ethical examination environment.
It is worth noting that this monitoring exercise was not limited to Jos alone. Prior to his visit to Plateau State, Prof. Wushishi had also overseen the conduct of the 2023 SSCE in other states, including Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, and Bauchi.
The NECO 2023 SSCE is set to conclude next week, and the examination body remains optimistic that the same level of organization and commitment will be maintained until the end.
