Pope Francis was recently presented with a signed shirt from Manchester United’s defender, Lisandro Martinez, at the Vatican City. The presentation was conducted in a private meeting, overseen by the dean of Manchester and the bishop of Salford.

The occasion for the Pope’s visit to Manchester was to pledge a commitment to tackle climate change, along with other religious leaders, hosted by the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

The meeting marked the first time that all the faith leaders of Greater Manchester came together with civic leaders to pledge a greener Greater Manchester region. The mayor expressed his great pride at the historic moment when the faith and civic leaders made their commitment to the Holy Father.

As a token of appreciation, Burnham presented a framed shirt of the United center-back, which was signed by the player’s countrymen priests. Prior to the presentation, Burnham tweeted, “Good morning Lisandro Martinez, we are about to give your gift to the Holy Father!”

It’s worth noting that Martinez is currently out of action due to injury and might not return until the end of the season.
