In a coordinated effort to combat terrorism, the Department of State Services (DSS) confirmed a joint operation with the military and police forces targeting terrorists’ hideouts in parts of Kaduna and Kano states. The operation, which took place on Tuesday, yielded significant results in the fight against insurgency.
According to Dr. Peter Afunanya, the DSS Spokesman, the raid encountered fierce resistance from the terrorists who resorted to deploying Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) against the security forces. One of the terrorists, wearing a suicide jacket, detonated himself, while three other suspects were apprehended during the operation.
Upon conducting a thorough search of the terrorists’ accommodation, which was secured by the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, several items of interest were recovered. These included two suicide jackets, an AK-47 rifle, a pistol, and a laptop.
Simultaneously, the raid conducted in Kano State resulted in the arrest of two suspects. Additionally, the security forces seized a pistol, eleven mobile phones, two hand grenades, one fully charged AK-47 magazine, two empty AK-47 magazines, a Peugeot 307 car, and an ID card belonging to a suspect who managed to escape.
The decision to conduct these raids was based on intelligence reports, which had earlier indicated that high-profile terrorists were regrouping in the North West region to carry out heinous acts. It is believed that these terrorists sought refuge in the area due to ongoing military operations in the North East.
Dr. Peter Afunanya expressed his commendation for the Nigerian Military and Police for their resilience and invaluable support, which led to the success of the operation. He emphasized the significance of interagency cooperation, describing it as a game changer in the fight against terrorism.
Furthermore, the DSS reiterated its commitment to collaborating with sister agencies to rid the nation of criminal elements, particularly during the current transition period and beyond.
