According to recent news reports, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Lagos state governorship candidate for the Labour Party (LP), has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government of relying on voter intimidation to maintain its strength and validity. Rhodes-Vivour, who is also known as GRV, claimed that the APC government had been using violence, division, and intimidation to remain in power for almost two decades.
He further stated that the indigenous Lagos people were well-informed and exposed, but unfortunately, the APC government continued to use tactics such as voter suppression and harassment to disenfranchise voters. Rhodes-Vivour specifically cited instances of targeted voter suppression in the ongoing election, alleging that polling agents at VGC were attempting to get voters to cast their ballots on the express, where they could be harassed by thugs.
Rhodes-Vivour, who had earlier cast his vote at his polling unit in Anifowoshe, Ikeja, Lagos State, is one of the frontrunners in the gubernatorial election. He will be competing against the incumbent Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC and Mr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran of the Labour Party. The election is expected to be hotly contested, especially given the unexpected victory of the Labour Party in Lagos state during the presidential election.
Rhodes-Vivour’s message has resonated particularly well with the youths of Lagos, who have been instrumental in the Labour Party’s rise. He remains a popular candidate, and many are hoping that the will of the people will prevail in the election, allowing a government based on voter intimidation to become a thing of the past.
