The Governorship and House of Assembly Elections held in Iperu-Remo, the hometown of the APC and PDP governorship candidates, Prince Dapo Abiodun and Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, respectively, witnessed a large turnout of eligible electorates. The Nigerian Tribune, which visited some of the polling units in the town, confirmed that voters were seen queuing up to perform their civic duty.
Our correspondent reported that the exercise was peaceful at Unit 4 Ward 5 and Unit 11 Ward 5, both located within the premises of Wesley Nursery and Primary School, Iperu, when visited. To ensure a hitch-free exercise, security personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the police, and the Department of Security Services were present at the polling units.
Similarly, at Ajura Ward 4 Unit 3 in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, voters conducted themselves in an orderly manner. However, the Biomodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) was observed to be malfunctioning, capturing only two voters at 9.30 am when the Nigerian Tribune visited the polling unit.
The State Commandant of the NSCDC, David Ojelabi, was on the ground with his personnel and spoke to our correspondent, commending the voters for conducting themselves in an orderly manner. He noted that the exercise had been peaceful so far, with reports received from across the State. He urged the people to come out and perform their civic responsibility by voting according to their conscience.
Meanwhile, military personnel blocked the Sagamu-Abeokuta expressway, stopping motorists and travelers from traveling in and outside Abeokuta, the State capital, due to their defiance of the Inspector General of Police’s order on the restriction of movement. Some of the travelers expressed their displeasure over the action of the military personnel.
Unlike what obtained during the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections, there was a heavy security presence in Abeokuta and major highways in the state. In Sapon, Oke-Ilewo, Ake, and some areas in Abeokuta, security agencies worked together to ensure a peaceful election.
