Coach Confirms Lionel Messi’s Exit from PSG After Saturday’s Game

Lionel Messi, the celebrated football legend from Argentina, is set to bid farewell to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) following their final Ligue 1 match of the season against Clermont Foot, as confirmed by coach Christoph Galtier on Thursday. Speculations surrounding Messi’s departure have been circulating for some time, particularly due to his suspension by the recently crowned French champions in early May.

The suspension was a consequence of Messi undertaking an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia. Galtier expressed to reporters that the forthcoming match at the Parc des Princes would mark Messi’s last appearance for PSG, adding that he considers himself fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach the greatest player in the history of football. Galtier also expressed his hope that Messi would receive a fitting farewell from the club and its supporters.

Throughout the season, PSG ultras have occasionally directed boos towards Messi. This has fueled speculation about the 35-year-old’s future, with numerous reports linking him to a potential move to the Saudi Arabian club, Al-Hilal. Interestingly, Messi’s long-standing rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, had joined Saudi side Al-Nassr in January.

Another possible option for Messi’s future is a return to his former club, FC Barcelona. Messi had spent his entire professional career at Barcelona before joining PSG due to financial difficulties faced by the Spanish champions. However, pundits argue that Barcelona’s expressed interest in re-signing Messi might be a mere smokescreen to appease the fans, as the club is still constrained by financial limitations.

Media sources have also speculated about a potential move to Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami, which is partly owned by football icon David Beckham. Nevertheless, Saudi Arabia appears to be the most likely destination for Messi at this stage. The football superstar has not made any recent comments regarding his future, leaving fans and experts eagerly awaiting his decision.

While Messi had previously expressed his desire to retire at Newell’s Old Boys, his boyhood club in his hometown of Rosario, Argentina, there has been little progress towards that goal. As of now, Messi aims to continue playing until at least the Copa America in June and July 2024, which will take place in the United States. Having realized his dream of winning the FIFA World Cup last year, Messi remains determined to prolong his professional career and contribute to further success on the international stage.
