Legal Counsel Anticipates Seun Kuti’s Release Following Administrative Procedure

Lagos, Nigeria – In a recent development regarding the case of Seun Kuti, the renowned Afrobeat singer who has been in custody, his legal representatives, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN) and Kunle Adegoke, have expressed optimism about his imminent release. The lawyers released a joint statement to the media, stating that administrative approval is the only step remaining before Kuti can be granted bail, as ordered by the Magistrate.

The statement issued by Kuti’s legal team sheds light on the proceedings that transpired during today’s court session. According to the lawyers, the purpose of the hearing was to receive the advice of the Lagos Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) regarding the case.

It is noteworthy that the court had previously directed that the prosecution of the case should be handled by the DPP’s office rather than the police. Consequently, the police were instructed to forward the case file to the DPP for evaluation and a final decision on whether to proceed with prosecution.

However, the lawyers learned that the court session did not take place as scheduled due to the Magistrate’s absence, who is reportedly attending a training course. Moreover, the advice from the DPP’s office is still pending, as the police investigation team is still in possession of the case file.

Nonetheless, the lawyers maintain that the release of Seun Kuti on bail, as ordered by the Magistrate, is contingent upon administrative approval, which is unrelated to the physical presence of the court. They expressed hope that the administrative process would be completed promptly, allowing Kuti to fulfill the bail conditions and secure his release.

“We remain optimistic that Mr. Kuti will be released today, in accordance with the granted bail conditions,” affirmed one of Kuti’s lawyers, emphasizing their confidence in the forthcoming administrative approval.

Seun Kuti, the son of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, had been detained following his arrest in connection with a recent public demonstration. The specifics of the charges against him have not been disclosed in the statement released by his lawyers.
