Lamidi Apapa, the factional chairman of the Labour Party (LP), found himself in the midst of a chaotic scene on Wednesday as he was mobbed by party supporters inside the presidential election petition court.
The incident resulted in Apapa being taken into protective custody to ensure his safety. The tense situation unfolded when Apapa arrived at the court to attend the proceedings.
He confronted Akin Osuntokun, the director-general of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign council, regarding the seating arrangement, leading to a heated exchange of words.
Tensions escalated rapidly until Josephine Ekperobe, the secretary of the presidential election petition court, intervened and managed to restore some semblance of order.
Unfortunately, the respite was short-lived, as tempers flared once again when the court adjourned the proceedings to a later date.
As Apapa attempted to address journalists following the adjournment, he was suddenly attacked. The crowd erupted in chants of “ole,” meaning “thief” in Yoruba, as Apapa was forcefully dragged and pushed out of the courtroom.
In the commotion, an unidentified individual in the crowd snatched Apapa’s cap and quickly fled the scene.
Despite the efforts of police officers to shield him, Apapa struggled to reach his car as the agitated crowd continued to follow him closely.
Realizing the potential danger, law enforcement officials within the court premises swiftly made the decision to take Apapa into protective custody to ensure his well-being.
